Video Work to be included in "Every Body Talks" Group Exhibition in Rome, Italy
My video piece from grad school called “It Could Be Worse, You Could be Fat” has been invited to this exhibition at The Factory in Rome, Italy in December of 2018. A lesser shown piece that pre-dates my CONTROL series, this particular video project served as a springboard for much of the work I was doing on body image issues at the time. Please see the show prospectus below:
EVERY BODY TALKS
The body I live in, the individual I am
The body is the first and most direct tool of communication.
Its only presence can often make up for verbal communication, both through codified signals and through spontaneous gesture and expressions.
Furthermore, through the transformation and construction of one’s own exteriority, the human being represents himself, unconsciously unveils significant traits of his personality and explicitly shows his personal choices or his embracing of cultural models.
The body is often the breeding ground for researching one’s own identity, thus giving voice to the need for self-affirmation, especially in a historical age in which visual communication has gained a paramount role.
Moreover, the body builds relationships with space, nature and other forms of life: proximity or alienation, subjection or dominance, acceptance or refusal.
Being aware that Every Body Talks, the exhibition brings together international artists who are among the most actively engaged in artistic research on the body, exploring key topics such as those of fluidity, transformation, variety, homogenization, sense of belonging, marginality, essence, appearance and relationships.
Curated by the students of the 8th edition of the Master’s Program in Art Management, promoted by Fondazione Terzo Pilastro – Italia e Mediterraneo, and IULM – International University of Languages and Media, the exhibition will be enriched by lectures, laboratorial activities and live performances, aimed at stimulating collective considerations about the role played by appearance in contemporary society, between socio-cultural constraints and individual freedom.
